West Central District Historic Landmark—Three Centuries of Tainan

Chihkan Tower, alongside Anping Fort, is one of Tainan’s most iconic historic sites. Originally Fort Provintia, built by the Dutch in 1652 as the Zeelandia administrative center, it has witnessed major changes since the Dutch era. Today it blends Chinese and Western architecture in an ancient atmosphere—the first stop for understanding Taiwan’s history and culture.

Historic Monument × Myth and Legend × City Spirit

Inside are Wenchang Pavilion, Sea God Temple, and Penghu Academy. Strolling the gardens, you will see a statue of Koxinga (Lord of the Imperial Surname) driving out the Dutch—expressing national spirit. Most striking are nine imperial steles and bixi (stone tortoises) on the lawn, moved from Great South Gate—legend says they are offspring of the dragon’s ninth son, adding mythic color to Chihkan Tower.

By day or night, Chihkan Tower shows different faces—solemn and historic by day; romantic and poetic at night with lighting. The front plaza often hosts arts and music events—Tainan’s warmest urban living room.

Nearby Sightseeing Links

In the heart of West Central District, walk to Shennong Street, Confucius Temple, National Museum of Taiwan Literature, Tainan Art Museum, Yongle Market, and Blueprint Cultural & Creative Park—ideal for a half- or full-day cultural stroll.
