Witness Four Centuries of Taiwan’s Royal City Ruins
Anping Fort in Anping District, Tainan, is one of Taiwan’s most historically significant monuments. Built in the 17th century as a Western-style fortress, it has survived Dutch rule, Koxinga’s recovery, Qing administration, and the present day—making it an ideal starting point to understand Taiwan’s maritime history, colonial past, and defensive architecture.
Historical Overview | The Rise and Fall of Fort Zeelandia
In 1624, the Dutch built Fort Zeelandia in today’s Anping as a military and commercial base. After ten years of construction, it was completed in 1634 as Taiwan’s first European castle. In 1662, Koxinga recovered Taiwan, renamed the site “Royal City,” and used it as his inner residence—symbolizing a shift in power and national self-determination.
Under the Qing, siltation of the harbor and shifting political centers, plus war damage, left the fortress in decline. Restoration during Japanese rule and after WWII shaped the site visitors see today, with major work completed by 1975.

Highlights | Historical Memory Through Time
Dutch wall ruins: The only surviving original Fort Zeelandia structure is the red-brick outer wall on the south side of the outer fort—Dutch-imported brick still standing after centuries.
Ancient banyan roots: Roots entwined with red walls symbolize the old city’s cycles of glory and decline—a favorite cultural photo motif.
Observation tower: Climb for views of the former Taijiang Inner Sea channel and today’s Anping neighborhood—a popular lookout and photo spot.
