First Academy of TaiwanX A Sacred Center of Learning Across Three Centuries

Step into Tainan and you step into living history. Located on Nanmen Road in West Central District, Tainan Confucius Temple was built in the 19th year of the Yongli era (1665)—Taiwan’s first government-built Confucian temple, known as the “First Academy of Taiwan” and a landmark of southern Taiwan’s cultural roots and educational heritage.

From Koxinga’s founding of the temple and school to its role as the Taiwan Prefecture Academy under the Qing dynasty, the Confucius Temple has nurtured generations of talent for more than three hundred years. Today it is a key stop for travelers seeking ancient-city culture and wisdom.

Must-See Highlights|A Five-Senses Journey Through History

Pankung Stone Arch: The Ceremonial Gateway to Confucian Learning

The only surviving “Pankung” stone arch in Taiwan, symbolizing a regional academy of feudal lords. Its fine carving and timber-style structure, with gourd and chiwen ornaments on top and eight welcoming stone lions, make it the ideal starting point for visiting Tainan Confucius Temple.

Dismount Stele: Bilingual Chinese-Manchu Inscription from Kangxi Year 26

Officials, soldiers, and commoners alike had to “dismount here,” showing reverence for the Sage. This Qing-era dismount stele is the earliest and best-preserved of its kind in Taiwan, with high historical and artistic value.

Dacheng Hall: Ancient Simplicity × Cultural Refinement

The main hall’s roof decorations are rich in symbolism: the “pillar to heaven” represents Confucius’ teachings through all ages; the “owl” motif signifies turning evil to good and educating all people; the wooden clapper bell stands for the spread of ideas—cultural codes unique to Confucian temple architecture.

Stone Lions and Imperial Path: Solemn Yet Charming

Eight miniature stone lions around Dacheng Hall each have a distinct pose—an endearing highlight. The central granite “imperial path” is carved with motifs of the four arts (qin, qi, shu, hua), a sacred walkway reserved for top scholars and the emperor, expressing Confucian literary and artistic spirit.

Annual Ceremony|September Confucius Rites & Plucking Wisdom Hair

The Shidian Ceremony held at dawn on Teachers’ Day (September 28) is a national folk custom and Taiwan’s most representative Confucian temple ritual. With ancient rites, the Liu Yi dance, and the plucking of wisdom hair, the solemn occasion draws visitors from home and abroad—a cultural event families and students should not miss.
