Taiwan's Iconic Mud Volcano Cones × World-Class Badlands × Top Yanchao In-Depth Tour
Did you know? There are only 27 active mud volcano areas worldwide—and Taiwan has one of the most complete!
Wushanding Mud Volcanoes Nature Reserve in Yanchao District, Kaohsiung, is Taiwan's most representative mud volcano terrain and one of the few places to observe "mud eruption" up close, with precious geological, ecological, and educational value.
This 3.88-hectare reserve, protected since 1992, is a field classroom for academics and eco tours. A must for travelers who love in-depth travel, outdoor exploration, and earth science.
Landscape Features & How They Form
How are mud volcanoes born?
Mud volcanoes are not volcanic eruptions. Underground natural gas along the Chishan Fault squeezes mudstone layers and pushes high-pressure mud to the surface, forming "mud cones." Of three main cones here, the tallest reaches 3.5 meters at a 50-degree slope, erupting thick mud every few seconds.
Mud flows down like "mud tongues"—sometimes with self-igniting gas—a dramatic sight and one of Taiwan's signature badland landscapes.
Education & Observation Points
Frequent eruptions: every few seconds, stable and safe to observe
Natural gas escape and ignition: some gas ignites on contact with air, showing geothermal energy
Badland terrain: soft mudstone and bare slopes show strong erosion
Classic outdoor science site: top choice for geology and ecology field study
* This sensitive reserve requires advance application for educational or academic visits. General tourists may not enter without approval.
