Alishan National Forest Recreation Area in Alishan Township, Chiayi County is one of Taiwan's most iconic high-mountain forest destinations, famed for its majestic sacred trees, forest railway, sea of clouds at sunrise, and seasonal floral displays that draw travelers from around the world.

Alishan Forest Railway

The Alishan Forest Railway is one of only three mountain railways still operating worldwide. Built originally to haul timber, it now carries visitors through the forest.

  • Zhushan Line: For sunrise viewing at Zhushan

  • Sacred Tree Line: Through the park to the giant tree area

  • Zhaoping Line: Connects Alishan Station and Zhaoping Station

  • ※ Train tickets are best booked in advance; late bookings may have no seats.

  • Sister Ponds (Jiemei Tan): Two nearby lakes of different sizes; the lakeside trail is about 180 meters with Xiangsi Pavilion

  • Xianglin Sacred Tree: Designated as the second-generation sacred tree after the original Alishan Sacred Tree fell in a lightning strike

  • Three-Generation Tree: Shows cypress generations living together—a remarkable sight

  • Sky Walk: Elevated boardwalk for strolling among the treetops with forest views below

  • Zhushan Sunrise Viewing Platform: One of the best sunrise spots; reach via the Zhushan Line

  • Alishan Museum: Exhibits on Alishan's ecology, forestry history, and Tsou culture

Seasonal Flowers

Cherry blossom season runs from February to April, featuring Taiwan cherry, Yoshino cherry, double-flowered cherry, and more. Yoshino cherry viewing concentrates around Alishan Police Station and in front of Alishan House. Two main cherry routes: Alishan House via Plum Garden and Alishan Police Station to Zhushan Trailhead; and Zhaoping Station via Sister Ponds, Shouzhen Temple, Ciyun Temple, Alpine Museum, Three-Generation Tree, and Elephant Trunk Tree back to Alishan House.



Suggested Itinerary

Take the park shuttle from the Visitor Center to Zhaoping Station, then visit Zhaoping Park, Sky Walk, Sister Ponds, Xianglin Sacred Tree, Three-Generation Tree, Alishan Museum, and Ciyun Temple in order, and return from Xianglin Station by shuttle to the Visitor Center.
