Into the Forest: Where Tranquility Meets Cascading Waterfalls

Looking for a quiet forest escape deep in the Alishan region, away from the crowds? Two easy, stunning trails in Meishan, Chiayi—Ayey Creek Waterfall Trail and Taixingyan Trail—are must-visit healing destinations. Waterfalls, tea plantations, century-old temples, and bird-filled shade… every step feels like walking through a landscape painting. Suitable for families and seniors alike, they are ideal for a relaxed day hike.

Ayey Creek Waterfall Trail | Taiwan's "Jiuzhaigou Pearl Shoals"

The Ayey Creek Waterfall Trail is about 700 meters long—a 25-minute one-way walk along wooden steps through the gorge. Three tiers of waterfall pour over the rock face, mingling with moss and greenery in picture-perfect scenes praised as Taiwan's version of Jiuzhaigou's Pearl Shoals.
Viewing platforms, tea tables, pavilions, and a suspension bridge line the route. You can also explore the Qing-era "Shimo Tianxia Gu" stone mill heritage site—a hidden trail blending ecology, culture, and natural beauty.

Taixingyan Trail | Birdsong, Tea Gardens, and a Century-Old Temple

Continue to the Taixingyan Trail, 600 meters along a ridge surrounded by tea fields. A viewing platform at the entrance overlooks layered mountains and Meishan tea plantations. Taiwan-endemic birds such as the Swinhoe's pheasant and black bulbul are often spotted; in late spring, Taiwan rhododendron adds bursts of color. The trail ends at the solemn, peaceful Taixingyan Ancient Temple, with a century-old plum tree and moso bamboo grove behind it—full of cultural charm.
