Shimen Historic Battlefield (Paiwan: Macacukes) lies on the border of Shimen Village, Mudan Township, and Hot Spring Village, Checheng Township, Pingtung County. It was the site of the Battle of Shimen during the 1874 Mudan Incident, witnessing Paiwan people's defense of their homeland.

Location and Terrain

About 3 km northeast of Sizhongxi, Shimen sits in a gorge between 370-meter Shimu Mountain and 450-meter Wuchongxi Mountain—a natural pass that is easy to defend. In Paiwan, Macacukes means "mutual support," symbolizing unity against outside threats.

History: The Mudan Incident and Battle of Shimen

In 1871, a Ryukyu ship drifted ashore near Mudan; crew members were killed by local indigenous people. Japan used this as a pretext to send Lieutenant General Saigo Tsugumichi to attack Taiwan's indigenous tribes in 1874. On May 22, Japanese forces reached Shimen and met fierce resistance from Mudan and Gaoshifo Paiwan warriors—the Battle of Shimen. Mudan chief Aruqu and his son and many warriors died fighting, showing indigenous resolve to protect their land.

Memorials and Cultural Heritage

Shimen Historic Battlefield Monument: Commemorates indigenous resistance in the Mudan Incident; the inscription "Clarify the Seas, Restore Our Rivers and Mountains" honors their unyielding spirit.

Saigo Memorial Stele: Built during Japanese rule to honor General Saigo's Taiwan expedition. After retrocession it was renamed, then restored—standing as a witness to history.

Heritage Registration: On September 15, 2023, Shimen Historic Battlefield was registered as a Pingtung County historic site.
