Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area straddles the border of Donggang and Linbian townships in Pingtung County. It is Taiwan's largest lagoon-type inner bay, covering 532 hectares with an average depth of about 3 meters. Established in 1997 and merged with the Xiaoliuqiu Scenic Area in 2000, it now encompasses a rich blend of natural and cultural landscapes—ecology, leisure, and local heritage—making it one of southern Taiwan's key tourist destinations.

Natural Ecology and Geography

Lagoon Ecology: Dapeng Bay is a pouch-shaped lagoon roughly 3,500 meters east–west and 1,800 meters north–south, with a water area of 532 hectares and average depth of 2–6 meters. The waters teem with flora and fauna, including distinctive mangrove species such as sea hibiscus, plus coastal plants like beach morning glory, agarwood, and bitter vine. Wildlife centers on birds, fish, and crustaceans—some 95 bird species including migratory and passage birds, fish such as grouper, and the signature fiddler crabs of the wetlands.

Main Attractions and Activities

Pengwan Cross-Sea Bridge: Taiwan's first openable scenic bridge, 579 meters long, spanning the Dapeng Bay estuary. Its daily bridge-opening show draws crowds of visitors.

Binwan Wharf (Sailing Base): Features a 200-meter artificial beach with windsurfing, kayaking, and speedboat activities. Every April the Dapeng Bay yacht and sailing series promotes water sports and tourism.

Qingzhou Coastal Recreation Area: On the southwest side of the lagoon's only outlet, backed by Dapeng Bay and facing the Taiwan Strait, it offers superb sea views toward Xiaoliuqiu and passing vessels—a 7.6-hectare stretch of blue ocean and sunny beach.
 

Bay Circuit Bike Path: The main route is about 12 km, or roughly 16 km with branch lines, passing lagoon scenery, Datun Wetland Park, Dawu Mountain, fishing villages, Qingzhou Coastal Recreation Area, and Pengwan Cross-Sea Bridge.
 

Donglong Temple: The spiritual center of Donggang, where the triennial King Boat Ceremony—one of Taiwan's most important folk festivals—is held.
